I believe many people still have this, although it is dormant in a large number of Americans.
What is patriotism?
George Washington provided us a great definition in his Farewell Address after finishing his two terms as President, thus setting a precedent for all succeeding presidents.
“Of all the disposition and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man [or woman] claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars [religion and morality] of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them.”
“Patriotism is as much a virtue as justice, and is as necessary for the support of societies as natural affection is for the support of families. The amor patriae [love of country] is both a moral and religious duty. It comprehends not only the love of our neighbors but of millions of our fellow creatures, not only of the present but of future generations.” - Benjamin Rush, a top 3 founding father according to John Adams
“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” - John Adams
"Where liberty is, there is my country." – Benjamin Franklin
"True patriotism springs from a belief in the dignity of the individual, freedom and equality not only for Americans but for all people on earth." – Eleanor Roosevelt
"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country." – John F. Kennedy
"Patriotism is easy to understand in America. It means looking out for yourself by looking out for your country." – Calvin Coolidge
These are just a few of the many quotes about patriotism. I’m certain many war heroes and veterans have their own unique views of what patriotism is and because we are all unique we are allowed unique views on things. Does patriotism mean persecuting some groups of people while elevating others? Does it mean adhering to the Constitution and not circumventing or destroying it? As for me I tend to align with the founders ideas on patriotism. I kind of like the politeness that comes from morality and religion.
